"New 'Gonzo' Tool Promises to Make Sense of Logs, Developers Still Can't Make Sense of Documentation"

According to Bob Quillin, co-founder and CEO of ControlTheory, Gonzo is designed to analyze log data as a language, using a large language model (LLM) to identify patterns and explain what happened. The tool can be easily installed on a laptop using Homebrew or Nix package manager, and can be scaled up to support large operations, including multicloud environments, with a design similar to Stripe's approach to supporting smaller customers. As demonstrated in a tutorial, Gonzo can be used to analyze logs from a mock app, and can also be integrated with Kubernetes, using Minikube, to observe and analyze logs from a cluster, with plans to integrate AI for observability analysis, quoting Quillin, "Logs are language, so if you throw the right information into an LLM, it can actually help explain what happened with the log". With its ability to handle multiple log streams and integrate with AI, Gonzo has the potential to replicate the success of Jaeger, another cloud-native deployment tool, and its development is expected to have significant implications for the field of observability, particularly with the increasing complexity of logs generated by AI-created code. As an open-source project, Gonzo is still in its early stages, but its creators have already put in significant engineering work, and its simplicity, speed, and scalability make it an exciting development in the field of observability.
