Backblaze’s b2-dedup Lets Data Hoarders Backup 5x Cheaper, AWS S3 Still Charging $80 Just to Cry Over Restores
A new tool, b2-dedup, has been introduced to facilitate the backup of multiple drives to Backblaze B2 with deduplication. Developed to address the issue of redundant uploads and storage costs, b2-dedup allows users to back up terabytes of data across multiple drives, NAS boxes, or computers to a single, offsite location. Backblaze B2 is a cost-effective option, with storage costs of approximately $6 per terabyte per month, significantly lower than competitors such as AWS S3 and Azure Blob. The tool uses a local SQLite database to remember file hashes, skipping duplicates and minimizing storage usage. With parallel uploads and resumable jobs, b2-dedup provides a efficient and reliable solution for personal and large-scale backups. The tool is compatible with Python 3.8 and requires a Backblaze B2 account and application key. By using b2-dedup, users can reduce upload time and storage bills, and enjoy a durable offsite location for their data. The developer has been using Backblaze since 2017 and has successfully backed up tens of terabytes of data.
